How do air source heat pumps work?

The technology behind air source heat pumps is tried and tested. It works in very much the same way as a refrigerator but in reverse. Heat from the air is 'sucked in' and transferred to a heat exchanger that contains a liquid refrigerant which absorbs heat and evaporates to a low-temperature gas. The gas is compressed and in the process, its temperature rises. When the gas reaches the heat exchanger where its heat is transferred to cold water - in turn the water heats and is circulated around your central heating system or stored in a hot water cylinder.

Why you should consider an air source heat pump

Many people benefit from air source heat pumps in terms of cutting carbon emissions, reducing energy usage and lowering energy bills.

Grants for air source heat pumps

If you live in England or Wales you can get £7,500 towards an air source heat pump with the government Boiler Upgrade Scheme. This grant would cover part of the cost of replacing fossil fuel heating systems (gas, electric, oil or LPG). As we are MCS certified you should first contact us to establish eligibility for the scheme.

Is an air source heat pump right for my home?

There are many factors that can come into play when deciding whether an air source heat pump is right for your home and indeed, the kind of pump. Monobloc heat pumps site entirely on the outside of your property,  whereas a split system incorporates some of the installation inside your home. Split systems are slightly more efficient but do take up indoor space. In either case you will need enough space outside your home to allow for good air flow around the unit. If you have plenty of room in your home, we'd generally recommend a split system.

What if I live in an apartment?

Compact heat pumps are specifically designed to work in smaller homes and flats that have modern insulation. Exterior wall space is required, as is a small cupboard, near to the wall.

The cost of installing an air source heat pump

Installation and running costs can very greatly depending on the size and age of your property, the size of the heat pump and how heat is currently distributed around your home. Contact us for a free quote and further advice...
