We delve into The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero Energy in Brief Report, which summarises the latest, significant statistics on solar usage in the UK.
One part of the Net Zero Energy in Brief Report that we're particularly interested in, studies the installed capacity of photovoltaics between 2010 and 2023 and it produces some really interesting statistics.
At the end of 2010 the total *cumulative capacity for solar installations in the UK was just 93.7MW by the end of November 2024 that figure was 17,559.8MW - thats a staggering increase of 17,503.3MW.
*Cumulative capacity is a figure that represents the total amount of installed solar capacity at a specific point in time, including all past installations, on a continuous basis.
The total number solar installations across, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as at August 2024 stands at 1,404,409 with a total capacity of 5024.3MW. The constituency of South Cambridgeshire has the highest installed capacity at 27.1MW for that period in time. Peterborough has, on the face of it, perhaps surprising capacity at 22.3MW but it does have 7,161 solar panel installations - very impressive.
In Scotland the stand out figures are found at Banff and Buchan - 18.9MW for 4,981 installations.
The largest factor that influences the take up of solar power is, available space. We learn this from the distribution figures where rural and suburban areas have more suitable properties i.e. detached or semi-detached housing where installation is made more suitable because of larger roof space. In densely populated areas like central London, where it's common to see more apartments and smaller properties the capacity is only 1.9MW.
